About Me

A birder since childhood, a writer since my teens, my work has been centered on renewing our lives as creatures and reconnecting Christian discipleship with the Earth. I’ve written for a wide range of magazines over the past two decades including The Christian Century, Plough, Christianity Today, Sojourners, The Oxford American, and Birding. My books include Cultivating Reality, This is My Body, Wendell Berry and the Given Life, The Art of Being a Creature, and soon to be released, Watch and Wonder: Birding as a Spiritual Practice.

Since 2016, I’ve served as a priest in the Episcopal Church, working in churches in my native state, Arkansas. Outside of my usual work responsibilities, I serve as the board chair of the Ekklesia Project, an organization that has deeply formed my understanding of discipleship. On the birding front, I also serve as an eBird reviewer for my region.

My wife Emily and I live on a small urban lot with our two daughters, Lily and Lucia, and a menagerie of animals both domestic and wild.
